WATCH NOW US Nonprofits: A Practical Guide to Global Mission Delivery

During this 90-minute, virtual workshop, Laura Solomon, Esq. (Laura Solomon and Associates) and Cindy Bergvall, CPA (Bee, Bergvall & Co.) will highlight key considerations for US Based charities operating abroad. With the global pandemic, there has been great economic need in our country and around the world. In times of crisis, people respond in many different ways—volunteering, giving, and even starting a nonprofit.

If you are thinking of starting a charity to meet global needs or you already have one that operates internationally, there are important compliance guidelines you need to follow. Failure to follow these rules can jeopardize the deductibility of the donations to your donor and even jeopardize the charitable, tax-exempt status of your organization.   There can also be stiff IRS penalties for failure to file certain IRS forms specific to activity with a foreign country.

We will review:

  • What needs to be in your Articles and Bylaws
  • Documentation you need to keep in Board Minutes; grant agreements and reporting financial records
  • Information you need to get from each foreign organization
  • Added controls and risks to be aware of when operating or donating to a charity in another country
  • Federal law, including U.S. Executive Orders, FBAR rules, OFAC guidelines, and Treasury Department and Financial Actions Task Force Anti-Terrorist Financing Guidelines- all presented in a user-friendly manner to help you navigate these complicated rules.
  • IRS Form 990 questions and forms related to foreign operations
  • Other IRS year-end forms
  • Practical Tips for successful, complaint grantmaking
