Director of Development: Baker Industries is a small, mission-driven team with a 46-year track record of punching above its weight class. As our first Director of Development, you will work directly with the President to grow Baker’s development program from a small but solid platform into something bigger — a rare opportunity to build on an established, financially stable foundation with a recently completed endowment campaign. You will be part of a four-person development team that includes the President, Donor Relations Coordinator, and Board Vice Chair for Grants and Development, working together to grow our fundraising capacity. This role is ideal for a self-starter who thrives in a collaborative, hands-on environment and is comfortable wearing multiple hats. You’ll have the opportunity to build systems, deepen donor relationships, and develop new revenue streams that directly support our expansion and the people we serve. This is a growth position with the potential to expand the development team over time as Baker’s fundraising capacity increases. The role includes regular time with participants and donors at our production sites, including our Philadelphia facility in the Kensington neighborhood.

Required:
- 5–7 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, development, or a related field.
- Demonstrated success in major donor cultivation and solicitation.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with donor database management and fundraising reporting.
- Self-starter who is comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a small team environment.
- Passion for Baker’s mission and the communities we serve.
The salary range for this position is $75,000–$90,000, commensurate with experience. Baker Industries offers a comprehensive benefits package.
Chief Executive Officer: Beyond Literacy The Chief Executive Officer will serve as BeLit’s principal strategic leader, external ambassador, fundraiser, advocate, and community voice.
The CEO will lead an organization of approximately 55 staff with a complex portfolio of public, philanthropic, and partnership-based funding. BeLit has a deeply experienced leadership team with significant expertise in adult education, operations, student services, finance, advancement, and program delivery.
The next CEO will guide operational strategy while the daily execution is handled by functional leaders. . The role will be approximately 80% external and strategic and 20% internal and operational, with greater internal engagement during the initial onboarding period.
The CEO will establish organizational direction, diversify revenue, build relationships with policymakers and funders, strengthen workforce partnerships, advocate for adult education, and empower BeLit’s leadership team to execute effectively.

Key Responsibilities:
Strategic & Organizational Leadership
- Establish and communicate a clear vision for BeLit’s next chapter, positioning adult education as a central component of workforce development and economic mobility.
- Lead thoughtful change in a rapidly evolving funding and policy environment while maintaining strategic discipline and avoiding mission drift.
- Strengthen alignment across programs, advancement, finance, operations, and the Board, ensuring that growth is matched by organizational capacity.
- Build trust across the organization through transparent communication, visible leadership, and meaningful engagement with staff and learners.
- Empower the experienced executive team to lead operations while providing clear direction, accountability, and strategic oversight.
External Leadership, Advocacy & Partnerships
- Serve as BeLit’s principal public ambassador and advocate across Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the broader adult education and workforce ecosystem.
- Build strong relationships with city, state, and federal policymakers, including the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Philadelphia Works.
- Position BeLit as an essential partner in Philadelphia’s workforce and economic mobility infrastructure and pursue opportunities for co-enrollment, diversified funding, and stronger system integration.
- Develop strategic partnerships with employers, educational institutions, workforce organizations, community organizations, and other aligned stakeholders.
- Advocate for adult education and influence public policy and funding decisions affecting BeLit and the field.
- Represent BeLit confidently in public forums, political settings, community events, and other high-visibility environments. Related travel anticipated at approximately 25%, including to Harrisburg, PA, and Washington, D.C.
Fundraising & Financial Sustainability
- Serve as BeLit’s senior fundraising leader, partnering with the Chief Advancement Officer and Board to diversify revenue and strengthen long-term financial sustainability.
- Cultivate major donors, foundations, corporations, government leaders, and other strategic funding partners.
- Increase unrestricted philanthropy, corporate partnerships, workforce contracts, earned revenue, and other innovative funding strategies.
- Maintain strong financial fluency, including understanding nonprofit financial statements, restricted funding, government contracts, cash flow, budgeting, forecasting, and audits.
- Ensure that new funding commitments are financially viable and aligned with program capacity.
- Partner with finance leadership and the Board to strengthen reserves, resource allocation, and long-term financial planning.
Program & Workforce Leadership
- Protect and strengthen BeLit’s core adult literacy, ESL, GED, and foundational education programs while expanding appropriate workforce pathways.
- Help translate BeLit’s existing strengths into a compelling workforce and economic mobility narrative without abandoning foundational learners.
- Develop partnerships that connect learners to training, employment, apprenticeships, and other next-step opportunities.
- Identify strategic workforce opportunities and evaluate growth against BeLit’s mission, capacity, and financial sustainability.
- Ensure strong collaboration between program and advancement teams so that external commitments reflect program realities and staff capacity.
Board Partnership & Governance
- Serve as a trusted partner to the Board, maintaining clear boundaries between governance and management.
- Provide candid and timely information regarding organizational performance, financial conditions, risks, and opportunities.
- Strengthen Board engagement in fundraising, advocacy, community relationships, and strategic priorities.
- Partner with Board leadership to strengthen committee effectiveness, and alignment around BeLit’s future.
The Leader:
Qualified candidates will bring:
- Senior leadership experience in nonprofit, adult education, workforce development, education, public-sector, or a related mission-driven organization.
- Strong knowledge of adult education and/or workforce development, with Philadelphia experience highly desirable.
- A demonstrated record of fundraising and revenue diversification, including experience with foundations, major donors, corporations, government, or other private revenue sources.
- Financial fluency sufficient to understand and manage complex nonprofit funding, restricted grants, government contracts, budgets, cash flow, audits, and resource allocation.
- Government and public-policy experience, including the ability to build effective relationships with city, state, and federal policymakers.
- A track record of building employer, workforce, education, or community partnerships.
- Experienced change management leader, including, funding and policy shifts, as well as growth opportunities.
- Exceptional communication, public-speaking, storytelling, advocacy, and relationship-building skills, ideally coming with media/press training and a comfort with conveying impact via social media platforms, especially LinkedIn
- Strong people leadership, with the ability to empower experienced leaders while building trust across frontline staff and the broader organization.
- Strategic judgment and discipline—the ability to pursue meaningful opportunities without overextending the organization.
- Authenticity, empathy, humility, resilience, and the confidence to make difficult decisions.
- A genuine belief in the transformative power of adult education and the ability to connect authentically with learners, staff, funders, policymakers, and community leaders.
